Factors affecting the timings of opening and closure of demographic window of economic opportunity

During demographic transition a stage comes when the rate of growth of population in working age-groups becomes greater than the rate of growth of the total population. This is the time when the window of economic opportunity opens and it closes when the sign of inequality between the two rates of growth reverses. The duration between the timings of opening and closure of demographic window is known as the ‘window of economic opportunity’ or ‘period of demographic dividend’. Professor Saxena will discusses this and propose a schematic diagram giving nexus between the factors identified affecting the timings of opening and closure of demographic window and the duration of the period of demographic dividend. He will also discuss the question 'Can the period of demographic dividend be extended through demographic and social engineering?' Professor Prem Saxena is Emeritus Professor at JJT University, India. Previously he was Garware Chair Professor, Centre for Research Methodology, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. Professor Saxena has more than 40 years of experience in theoretical and applied research and teaching of demography and statistics. He has published nearly 100 research papers in peer-reviewed professional journals and as chapters in books and edited three books.
